Entomologist Job Description and Profile

The job of an entomologist is basically to do the work for the classification, identification and control of various insects which have bad effect on environment under general direction. An entomologist knows well taxonomy and the economies of insects categorized as plant pests and other mollusks and arthropods and especially work on that.

Duties and Specifications

An entomologist will have to fulfill a number of duties and responsibilities and they are as follows:

  • An entomologist has to performs and supervise lab and field surveys on the pests.
  • He or she will basically have to do the work for the identification, detection and classification of pest insects.
  • He or she has to prepare the reports and so will have to analyze and make the appropriate reports and records.
  • He or she will have to prepare the reports and recommendations on damage to insects as well as potential damage to plants and crops.
  • It is the duty to aware the people about the controlling of pests so will have to provide the important information
  • He or she will also have to give the pertinent training to staff members and the public on issues such as insect identification and detection
  • He or she has to provide the information about the pest control procedures with the use of bulletins and public speaking.
  • He or she has to assist the seniors in the exclusions of pest exclusion completely.
  • He or she has to work for the regulation of nursery and enforcement of pesticide use.
  • It will be also the duty to assist in the use of beneficial types of parasites and predators and should use them also.
  • It will be the duty to have full biological control of the desire species of pests.
  • He or she has to prepare and maintain all the records and reports as well as have to prepare test and survey reports.
  • It will be also the duty to submit reports to various government groups and agencies.

Skills and Specifications

A person should have the following skills and specifications to be an entomologist:

  • The candidate should have the ability to perform all taxonomic and curatorial work and tasks.
  • He or she should be able to evaluate the status of pest perfectly.
  • He or she should have the proficiency in the identification of insects so will be able to understand and stop that.
  • He or she must know a variety of techniques, methods and procedures as well as lab and field analysis as well as control techniques.
  • It will be the duty to aware the people about the techniques and procedures so should be most known how to explain information to the public.
  • He or she must be able to interpret regulations and laws pertaining to insect control.
  • The candidate should have the ability to establish effective and harmonious work relationships with the company staff and the members.
  • He or she will have to make the technical reports so must know how to create clear technical reports.
  • The candidate should have the ability to effectively assign, plan and lead the work of staff.

Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree for the job is a Bachelor’s degree in the field of entomology, zoology, biology or other science course that includes 12 units in entomology.
  • The candidate should have the past 2 years of professional entomology experience or in the related area.
  • In the absence of work experience, a Master’s degree in the course of entomology can be a substitute for the candidate.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License (Class C).
