Environmental Engineer Job Profile and Description

An Environmental engineer has to design projects and work as a consultant in construction projects. He or she has to use the chemical, biological, physical and the principles of engineering for solving environment related problems and employs for engineering firms, government agencies, and private companies. The Environmental engineer normally specializes in any one of environmental issue that constitutes water pollution, air pollution, green construction or solid waste management.

Duties and Responsibilities

There are the following duties which an environmental engineer has to fulfill:

  • He or she will have to design for the industrial wastewater treatment
  • He or she also needs to design the systems for municipal water supply
  • He or she will have to work for assessing the reclamation and recycling processes of the environment.
  • He or she will basically have to work for the cleanliness of the environment so conduct studies for hazardous waste management.
  • It will be the duty to consult on the environmental impacts with the people and gain more and more information.
  • He or she has to discuss the problems with the various industrial construction projects.
  • The duty include the inspection work so will have to  inspect and evaluate the municipal and industrial programs
  •  He or she will have to work for the assessing the compliance with environmental standards and regulations.
  • He or she will be needed to work with environmental planners, engineers, hazardous waste technicians, scientists, and other specialists
  •  He or she will have to discuss up on the matter of environmental problems and will have to look for the solutions.
  • He or she will be needed to work on the global environmental problems like acid rain, water and air pollution, global warming, and ozone layer depletion.
  • It will be the duty to prepare, review, and then revise existing and newer environmental regulations
  • It will be needed to monitor the reports also and associated recommendation reports along with monitoring their progress.
  • It will be also done to advise government and industrial agencies about the efficiency of environmental standards and policies.

A person needs to have the following skills and specifications to be an environmental engineer:

  • The candidate should have the ability to understand work related documents so will be able to study them.
  • The candidate needs to have a logical thinking and reasoning ability
  • The knowledge of identify the pros and cons of available solutions is compulsory in the candidate.
  • The candidate should have the ability to communicate effectively so should have the communication skills both verbally and written.
  • He or she should be a good listener.
  • He or she should understand the impact of new information
  • He or she will have to understand about the impacts which will affect both present and future decisions.

Education and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is a must to qualify for the post of an environmental engineer. The institution that provides the degree should be an accredited one.
