Carpenter Job Profile and Description

Carpenters are one of the major construction workers employed in residential or commercial building projects. They are involved in the construction projects from simple projects like furniture making to erecting building and highways. They are basically the expert woodworkers who construct, erect, and repair structures made from wood or other similar materials and related materials like glass and ceramic tiles.

Carpenter Duties and Responsibilities

A carpenter needs to fulfill a wide range of duties and responsibilities and they are as follows:

  • The person should have the ability to observe work shift hours and not be late for work.
  • He or she needs to observe the safety regulations such as wearing helmets and other prescribed protective uniforms.
  • It will be the duty to report to the foreman supervisor and other seniors for promptly having any problem or obstacle in the construction progress.
  • He or she has to use Company provided hand tools and construction devices and report immediately any operational problem when using them.
  • He or she has the duty to construct wooden mould for concrete formation.
  • It will be the duty to work for underground construction projects such as constructing and erecting wooden scaffolding, tunnel wood bracing and brattices for underground construction projects.
  • He or she needs to work according to the blueprint designs and install prefabricated building parts in designated places.
  • He or she needs to do the repairing and construction work such as furniture and fixtures as necessary.
  • He or she has to assist in the installation of construction machinery.
  • The person needs to accomplish and complete daily job accomplishment reports when required.

Carpenter Skills and Specification

The skills and specifications required in a carpenter are as follows:

  • The person needs to be physically very fit and should have excellent medical and physical fitness.
  • He or she has the ability to follow safety regulations and instructions and in interpreting building blueprints as well.
  • The person needs to have verbal and written communication, social and interpersonal skills to do the job.

Carpenter Education and Qualifications

  • The person needs to have a high school diploma which is basic and most carpenters learn while on the job.
  • The person having 2-4 years in a formal apprenticeship program is preferred for the job.
  • It will be added as an advantage if the candidate has a vocation certificate in carpentry from a community college.

Carpenter Salary

  • The median hourly wage of salaried carpenters was $18.72 with the middle 50% earning between $14.42 and $25.37.
  • The bottom 10% earned about $11.66 while the top 10% earned $33.34.
  • Non-residential building contractors paid the highest median to carpenters at $21.09 an hour.
