The dean of the continuing education is the one who heads the colleges or a number of universities which recognize the need to offer courses designed to complete the degree of many who had stopped their college education after getting employed or have started their own business. This is a type of undergraduate college which generally held at night.  The job calls for someone who himself or herself is concurrently holding an executive position in a corporate setting and holds various positions in many of the industries.

Dean of Continuing Education Duties and Responsibilities

There are the following duties and responsibilities of a dean of continuing education which are expected to be fulfilled:

  • The responsibility is to maintain the coordination with the various colleges and faculty heads.
  • He or she has to play an important role in providing the special dispensation in the hiring and screening of part time educators for the college.
  • He or she has to offer selected courses provided in other colleges such as BS in Accounting Commerce, Economics, HRM, Public Administration, Industrial Engineering and other courses.
  • It will be needed to provide those courses which are more suited to executives who have not completed their earlier college education.
  • He or she has to accredit the course units depending on the college earlier attended but unfinished so needs to be taken before if they are still relevant to the courses.
  • He or she needs to accredit the experiences of the students in their careers and will have to try for t the subject units in the Continuing Education courses.

  • The person must have the superior verbal and written communication skills to be an excellent communicator.
  • He or she should have required interpersonal and diplomatic skills to do the job.
  • The other skills required for the job are the excellent leadership skills to be a good leader.
  • He or she should have exceptional organizational and managerial skills to do the effective management.

  • The person needs to have a master’s degree which is basic to do the job.
  • It will be added as an advantage for the person having 9 -12 years of past working experience as a corporate executive.

The salary depends upon the function of location and university where the college belongs, the student population and the dean’s qualification.

  • According to the College and University Professional Association for Human resources the annual median salary of the Dean of Continuing Education in 2008 stood at about $110,000.
