Museum education officer is basically employed in the large and frequently visited museums. They are generally trained as teachers with the combination of previous teaching experience with the entire knowledge of the collection. The job entails undertaking initiatives in developing and administering educational programs. He or she has is responsible for informing the visiting tourist groups and school classes or the general public about the museum’s collection and other things.  They also have the responsibility to form part of any mobile museum exhibitions to local and overseas points.

There are the following duties and responsibilities of a museum education officer which needs to be fulfilled:

  • The prime responsibility is to maintain the coordination with the school and tour agencies to get schedules of museum visit.
  • He or she needs to prepare materials for the education tour of the museum properly.
  • The museum education officer needs to develop the instructional, information or promotional materials about the museum’s collection in print and online.
  • It will be the responsibility to assist the museum curator and archivist in their work.
  • It will be needed to develop the museum’s cataloguing of artifacts.
  • The duty includes archiving in the computer database so needs to do the development of informational write-up on each item.

Museum Education Officer Skills and Specifications

The skills and specifications required to do the job in a person are as follows:

  • The person needs to be an excellent communicator and should have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • He or she should have excellent interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships.
  • He or she should have the people management skills to do eth effective management.
  • He or she should have the basic computer knowledge.
  • He or she should be able to handle museum’s database and work with word processing and spreadsheets when required.
  • He or she needs to have the excellent high organization skills to do the job properly.

Museum Education Officer Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree required for the job is a college degree in history or the social sciences or a secondary teaching past working experience in history.
  • It will be an added advantage for the person having 2-3 years of past working experience in a similar museum education.
