A school psychologist is basically the one who sort out the emotional and other study related problems of the students. He or she is generally appointed in schools for the counseling of students. A student actually faces many phases in his or her school life like disturbance in studies and other mentally stress. There may be the conflicts such as unavoidable mental pressure and lack of motivation and in performing well. The psychologist needs to provide help to a depressed student by counseling him or her properly.

Duties and Responsibilities

There are a number of duties and responsibilities which a school psychologist needs to fulfill and they are as follows:

  • The school psychologist has the prime responsibility to be friendly with the students.
  • It will be the duty to understand the core problem which is faced by students to determine the solution.
  • He or she needs to understand the root cause of mental stress of the students to determine the personal reason associated with this.
  • It will be the duty to prepare and maintain the records of the students to keep it for future records.
  • It will be needed to understand the exact stress reason of the student by reviewing the previous psychological and school performance history of the student.
  • It will be the duty of a school psychologist to consult with teachers and parents of a student to know about his or her behavior and other related issues.
  • He or she has the responsibility to suggest appropriate remedies to keep that student stress-free.
  • He or she also needs to initiate the innovative teaching methods and procedures for benefit of all students.
  • It will be the duty to guide the students in the right direction.
  • He or she has to motivate the students to perform well in studies and games properly.
  • The person should have good communication skills and needs to be an excellent communicator both verbally and written.
  • He or she needs to have the ability to do the work of documentation with the ability to maintain record for further reference.
  • The person needs to have a friendly behavior with the students to do research about his actual problem.
  • He or she should have exceptional interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationship with the people.
  • He or she should have the ability to put a keen eye for details.
  • The person needs to have the analytical skills and be a quick observer.
  • He or she needs to be very good at reading minds and behavior of a person as it is the job of a school psychologist.
  • The person desiring to do the job as a school psychologist should have a post graduate degree in psychology.
  • The other requirement for the job is the past working experience to be a psychologist along with the Ph.D.
