Medical Transcriptionist Job Profile and Description

The Medical Transcriptionist is responsible for the medical dictations using dictation and word processing system functions. He or she has to transcribe the medical dictations such as patient medical histories, patient assessment, consultations, discharge summaries, diagnosis, prognosis, therapeutic procedures, operating room reports, and progress notes. The Medical Transcriptionist may also have the duty to dictate information related to medical test reports, administrative correspondence and communication to other medical providers.

Duties and Responsibilities

There are a wide range of duties and responsibilities which are required to be fulfill by a Medical Transcriptionist:

  • The main duty is to apply the knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology, and rules of English language to the transcription of dictation.
  • He or she also needs to recognizing, interpreting, and evaluating discrepancies, inaccuracies and inconsistencies in medical dictation.
  • He or she has to prepare the proper reports and documents using word processing software and personal computer from dictated information.
  • He or she is responsible for the editing, revising, and clarifying the inaccuracies without altering the actual meaning of the medical dictation or the style of dictator.
  • It is needed to make sure that the documents are prepared properly with all the essential clinic or patient information.
  • He or she has to seek the assistance to clarify the medical dictation, which is incomplete or unclear.
  • He or she has to make the flag of the reports.
  • It is needed to check the reports for correct punctuation and grammar and correcting errors, if any.
  • He or she has to utilize the reference materials efficiently and appropriately to facilitate the accuracy of reports.
  • It is needed to work for the meeting quality and production standards and deadlines.
