Public Health Microbiologist Job Description and Profile

The Public Health Microbiologist is the one who is responsible for the interpretation of microbiological tests in the areas of environmental sanitation and communicable diseases. He or she has to perform the tasks and responsibilities under the general supervision.

Duties and responsibilities

There are the following duties and responsibilities of a Public Health Microbiologist:

  • The basic duty is to perform lab tests in the areas of mycology, bacteriology, serology, virology and parasitology.
  • He or she is responsible for preparing specimens of environmental, animal, human origin.
  • He or she has to help in the diagnosis and check-up of sexually-transmitted conditions like gonorrhea, HIV, herpes, sypillis and chlamydia, tuberculosis as well as coccidioidomycosis, tuberculosis and other illnesses like the diphtheria and plague.
  • He or she needs to analyze and explain test data.
  • It will be the duty to prepare full reports of test findings.
  • He or she has the responsibility to maintain corresponding records such results.
  • It is needed to conduct high quality control tests.
  • He or she has the duty to ensure test compliance with company rules and regulations.
  • It will be the responsibility to supply technical and medical information to doctors, nursing staffs and clinical labs.
  • It will be the duty to provide the information regarding interpretation of lab exams and other laboratory methods and procedures.
  • He or she needs to use the automated and computerized equipment.

Skills and Specifications

The required skills and specifications are as follows:

  • The person should have the ability to analyze important data and form conclusions.
  • He or she must be able to explain technical data and information.
  • He or she must be able to understand, and apply local, federal and state laws that pertain to public health lab.
  • The person needs to have the proper knowledge of the keeping of reports and records..
  • He or she should be able to communicate with various types of people.
  • The person needs to have the ability to operate lab equipment and computers properly.
  • The person needs to have the proper knowledge of principles of biology, chemistry, physics and microbiology.
  • He or she should be familiar with federal and state laws that affect public health lab and with equipment and techniques utilized in performing lab tests.
  • The person must be aware of lab safety practices.

Education and Qualifications

  • The person needs to possess Certificate of Public Health Microbiologist issued by State Department of Human Services.
