Surgeon Job Profile and Description

A Surgeon is someone who is responsible for correcting deformities, repairing injuries, preventing diseases, and improving body functions of patients. The main objective and the responsibility are to provide effective and efficient surgical services to patients. A general surgeon is someone who performs various types of surgeries. Generally, Most of the surgeons are specialized in performing surgery on certain part of the body, such as Neurosurgeon, Plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

There are a wide range of duties and responsibilities which are required in a person to do the job of a surgeon:

  • The surgeon has the prime responsibility to determine the necessity of surgical operations and the best suitable operating procedure.
  • He or she has to learn the patient’s medical history regarding certain allergies and anticipating the expected results after the operation.
  • It is needed to decide the operating procedure and the appropriate surgical instruments depending on the patient’s physical condition.
  • He or she has the responsibility to provide proper information and risks related with surgery to the patients.
  • The surgeon has the duty to analyze the patient’s physical condition by managing, planning, and scheduling the surgery.
  • It is also necessary to prepare the proper case history of patient after the successful completion of surgery and providing the proper surgery care.
  • The surgeon is responsible for conducting the sufficient planned weekly ward rounds.
  • It is needed to oversee the monitoring care, checking progress, and allowing early discharge of patients under care.
  • He or she is responsible for the issuing a discharge summary to every patient prior to leaving the hospital.
  • He or she needs to maintain the effective working relationships with patients without any cultural differences while dealing with patients.
  • He or she has to consult with the patient referrals and procedure outcomes with general practitioners and medical staff.
  • It will be needed to perform the tasks related to the clinical staff and junior medical staff.
  • The surgeon has to maintain the collaboration with the  administrative staff and management staff.

Skills and Specifications

The skills and specifications required to do the job are as follows:

  • The person should have the ability to promote friendly climate, cooperation, and good morale within the team.
  • He or she should be able to Able to operate in demanding and rapidly changing conditions as it is the job requirement.
  • He or she needs to have a very high grade of mental concentration and physical capacity to do the job.
  • The person needs to have the required skills to use the surgical instruments.
  • The person needs to have a very good tolerance levels as surgeries lasts for many hours.
  • It is needed to have very strong decision-making and practical skills to do the job.
  • The person should have the ability to work very long hours, often under tight and tremendous pressure and emergency conditions or situations.
  • It will be needed to have the superior communication skills both verbal and written.
  • The person needs to have Compassion to do the job and the ability to provide direct care in a kind and compassionate manner.

Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree required fro the job is A Bachelor’s degree in medicine from an accredited institution and Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biology.
  •  The other requirement is having the related surgical education.
