The job profile of an ‘Assistant Cook’ requires a person to assist the head cook or chef for a wide number of functions in the kitchen – menu planning, food preparation, sanitation, ingredients purchasing. The assistant cook directly reports to the head chef and executes the orders. Generally, there is more than one assistant cook in a restaurant, however small outlets may employ only one. An assistant chef is handed over charge of a part of the kitchen operation.                     

Assistant cook duties and responsibilities -

• Assist the head cook or chef in planning the menus
• Keep the cooking area clean & hygienic
• Keep the cooking equipments clean
• Train & manage the kitchen support staff
• Prepare cooking ingredients
• Prepare dressings on salads and desserts
• Move the kitchen utensils wherever needed
• Follow & implement the kitchen safety regulations
• Perform the duties of the head chef in his/her absence

Assistant cook skills and specification -

• Knowledge about food preparation
• Knowledge about nutrition in different foods
• Ability to take and understand orders implicitly
• Suggesting new recipes & interesting ideas for menu planning
• Good communication skills
• Should be a team player and coordinate with the kitchen team
• Should be physically fit & strong to for lifting heavy pots and pans

Assistant cook education and qualification -

• A high school diploma
• A diploma in cookery and nutrition, not essential, but helps in finding a good job

Many hotel management institutes offer certificate courses in food preparation.

Assistant cook salary -

An assistant cook earns a salary of around $16,000. It grows as per the experience.
