Employee Benefit Consultant Job Profile and Description

Employee benefit consultants help a company to develop, organize and implement the different benefits schemes that they offer to their staff. Employee benefits may include a number of schemes like pensions, medical, life assurance, travel allowance, entertainment allowance etc, which may vary from organization to organization. The employee benefit consultant may also advise and inform employees of the benefits available to them.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The employee benefit consultant plans the pension aspects of mergers and acquisitions
  • He has to carefully complete pensions accounting as per company’s rules.
  • He must calculate actuarial valuation of pension schemes
  • He has to develop pension and benefits schemes and make the employees aware of the formalities
  • He must keep himself up to date with all legislation or rules and regulations related to employee benefits
  • He must advise individuals about their benefits and give them suggestions or answer their queries
  • He must ensure the minimum funding requirements of the schemes and make sure that the budget is within the means of the company
  • He must keep proper records of all employees, their claims, compensations details and regularly enter and update data in the company’s data base

Skills and Specifications

  • Employee benefit consultants must be knowledgeable about the company’s policies and accordingly follow them
  • He should have good written and verbal communication skills and good people skills
  • He should have good analytical skills and must be good with numbers as one may have to make quick calculations
  • He should be discreet as it important to keep such information confidential

Education and Qualifications

There are many private institutes that provide diploma in pension management and anyone interested in becoming an employee benefit consultant can go for these courses. One can also do a course in human resources or an MBA to be in this field.
