Employed in high technology, high volume manufacturing plants such as in the automotive and semiconductor companies as well as in pharmaceutical and research companies with high risk laboratories, the Robotics Technician is responsible for installing and maintaining robotic equipment to ensure undisrupted operations. They are also found in large logistics warehouses that use rail robotics in storing and retrieving machine readable parts in bins that can reach 2-3 stories high. They are also present in the military that use unmanned surveillance robotic vehicles.

Robotics Technicians Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build-up, assemble and install robotic devices or systems in stationary positions or as mobile devices on rails and tracks.
  • Troubleshoot, disassemble and reassemble robotic and ancillary equipment for repairs that include replacement of defective sensors, circuit and logic boards, sensors, controllers, micro servomotors and actuators.
  • Install, program, customize and repair programmable controllers.
  • Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance on robotic systems or components.
  • Provide cognitive training of robots with the use of artificial intelligence software as applicable.
  • Assist robotics engineers in the design, configuration, or application of robotic systems.

Robotics Technicians Skills and Specifications

  • Must have excellent understanding of electronics, computer and automation technologies
  • Must have high analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Can operate laser interferometers, programmable logic controllers, waveform monitors and computer robotic application systems

Robotics Technicians Education and Qualifications

  • An associate or certificated post secondary course in electronics or computers is basic while an equivalent experience in electronic repair and troubleshooting of high tech equipment is an advantage.
  • A BS degree in Electrical Engineering is an advantage.

The median hourly wage of electrical, electronics and robotics technicians of commercial and industrial equipment stood at $23.29 in 2008. The middle 50% received income between $18.40 and $28.73 per hour with the lowest 10% earning $14.39 and the highest 10% earning $33.81. The median in government or military organization was $25.31.
