Elevator Installer/Repairer Job Profile and Description

Elevator Installers and Repairers, also known as elevator mechanics or elevator constructors, assemble, install, and repair commercial and residential elevators, escalators, and chairlifts for disabled and elderly, along with moving walkways or conveyors in airports in both new and old buildings. Employed by elevator and escalator makers, they can also modernize or enhance old elevators and escalators based on manufacturer recommendations.

Elevator Installer/Repairer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assemble, install, and maintain elevators and escalators in commercial establishments, corporations and overpasses as well as conveyor walkways in airports and sidewalks using prescribed hand power tools and testing instruments.
  • Conduct functional tests of newly installed conveyance contraptions to ensure compliance to specifications, such as stopping at floors within set times and smooth travel.
  • Isolate and locate malfunctions in motors, brakes, cables, control systems prior to repairing or replacement relevant parts.
  • Ensure that building codes and safety regulations are met.
  • Submit service or installation reports certifying compliance to specifications and building standards.
  • Log all repair calls and work performed for proper billing.

Elevator Installer/Repairer Skills and Specifications

  • Proper medical and physical health conditions.
  • Should have adequate comprehension skills to follow operational and safety regulations and instructions.
  • Should have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Elevator Installer/Repairer Education and Qualification

  • A high school diploma with a 2-3 years of experience in an apprenticeship work
  • Passing the National Association of Elevator Contractors exam as a Certified Elevator Technician (CET) is an added advantage.

Elevator Installers and Repairers enjoy one of the highest salaries in the construction industry. On an average the hourly wage is $36 with the middle 50% earning between $27 and $41. The lowest 10% earned around $21 per hour while the highest 10% got about $49. The median hourly wages in the building equipment contractors industry was $35.
