Motorboat Mechanic Job Profile and Description

The repair and servicing go motorized boats whether fro leisure or for fishing is often best left in the capable hands of veteran Motorboat Mechanics who have made a career in repairing an overhauling outboard and in-boat motors. You find them working in marinas either as freelance mechanics or in repair centers.

Motorboat Mechanic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow manufacturer’s repair checklist that usually includes detailed inspection cleaning and repair or replacement of fuel injection systems, brakes, electrical systems, plugs, carburetors, and other parts.
  • Inspect and repair or adjust propellers and propeller shafts
  • Following inspection, disassemble and inspect motors to isolate defective parts, using mechanic’s hand tools and gauges.
  • Repair or adjust parts that do not work properly or replace unfixable parts.
  • Repair engine mechanical equipment such as power-tilts, bilge pumps, or power take-offs.
  • Document inspection and test results, repair work done and parts replaced for proper billing and record upkeep
  • Replace parts such as magneto points, gears, piston rings, and spark plugs
  • Order parts directly from manufacturers if not available from local shops

Motorboat Mechanic Skills and Specifications

  • Should possess be afraid of getting grease over hands and body during the repair
  • Should possess excellent command of mechanical principles
  • Should possess good interpersonal and communication skills to be able to explain to customers the nature of the problem and why parts have to be replaced if needed

Motorboat Mechanic Education and Qualifications

A high school diploma and 2-3 years of apprenticeship with a seasoned motorcycle mechanic may be adequate but a post secondary diploma or associate degree in mechanical engineering from a community college or vocational school is preferred
