Employed by movie production companies, film distributors and independent entertainment companies, Box Office Analysts provide valuable insights on the performance of commercial movies at the tills. Often reporting to a media consultant or Film Marketing and Distribution Executive, their analytical reports on movie box office performance for a given period can guide movie producers, directors and actors with information on the trends that bring audiences to the theaters or patronize film titles.

Box Office Analyst Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the research methodology in gathering the most accurate box office results for Hollywood and independent movies for a specified period using various online and real-life sources
  • Gather and compile data for analysis to arrive at a reasonably accurate prognosis of movie trends, audience viewership profiles, variations across demographics and geographies, etc.
  • Submit reports to movie producers, directors, cast and crew and other interested industry stakeholders with summary highlights and recommendations.
  • Ensure that all reports are properly annotated with the proper sources and other acknowledgements.
  • Conduct executive presentations of the reports as may be required for further elucidation of contents and recommendations.

Box Office Analyst Skills and Specifications

  • Should have the organizational, observation, analytical and reasoning skills to discern meaningful trends from a collection of numbers/
  • Should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Can work long hours or outside of regular work hours.

Box Office Analyst Education and Qualifications

  • A college degree in statistics or business administration is basic
  • A master’s degree in statistical science is an advantage
  • 5-8 years of experience in any analytical function covering market demographics, consumer lifestyles and social trends is a should

The annual salary of a Box Office Analyst varies across film production and distribution companies, but is currently indicated at around $75,000m, with a 10% to 20% inconsistency.
