Medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of female reproductive ailments are gynecologists while those who manage pregnancy and post delivery patients are obstetricians. But it is not uncommon that both disciplines are often taken together so that they are known as OB/GYN physicians who are responsible for women’s health and medical care.

Obstetricians and Gynecologist Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide medical attention and care for women during prenatal, natal, and postnatal periods.
  • Meet with expectant mothers to explain child birth procedures, discuss and test results and other concerns.
  • Provide diagnosis, prevention and treatment of female reproductive organs.
  • Monitor patients’ reproductive health conditions and treatment progress and reevaluate them as necessary.
  • Perform cesarean sections or surgical procedures as may be needed to preserve both mother’s and baby’s health.
  • Prescribe therapy, medication, and other medical care products to prevent or treat disease or injury.
  • Analyze previous medical histories in diagnosing patient’s medical condition.
  • Maintain and update patient’s medical information to include medication history and lab/test results.
  • Advise mothers and women regarding proper nutrition, diet, exercise, hygiene, and disease prevention.
  • Refer patients to medical specialist when suspecting ailments beyond capacity to treat.
  • Keep abreast with developments in the discipline.

Obstetricians and Gynecologist Skills and Specifications

  • Should have excellent social, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with patients and hospital staff.
  • Should have strong ability to work under extreme pressure of childbirth and delivery procedures.

Obstetricians and Gynecologist Job Education and Qualifications

A doctor of medicine with specialization in obstetrics and gynecology as well as a state license to practice as a doctor is required.
