Neonatal nurse practitioners care for new born babies. Since the number of premature births and births from the use of fertility drugs and treatments are on the rise, there is an increasing need for a large number of neonatal nurse practitioner.

Neonatal nurse practitioner duties and responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of a neonatal nurse practitioner are:

  • Providing continues care for normal babies, premature babies and babies with health problems
  • Taking care of the babies for a month after birth
  • Caring for babies with serious health conditions that may require surgeries. In this regard, neonatal nurse practitioners have to assist the doctors in surgery and take care of the baby after surgery
  • Dressing the baby as soon as it is born
  • Collecting blood samples from the baby immediately after birth
  • Helping new mothers get acquainted with the caring patterns for the baby

The skills and specifications of a neonatal nurse practitioner are:

  • Taking neonatal care as the special elective in the nursing degree
  • Graduation degree in neonatal medical care
  • Certification is required by the American Association of Critical care Nurses(AACN)

For the certification course, the candidate will have to pass a written exam and put in 500 hours of clinical practice
