Nurses form an integral part in the medical industry and play a critical role in the care of patients. A hospital has different employees handling different responsibilities and nurses are directly in charge of dealing with patients. There are different types of nurses and their job duties vary according to their designation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Nurses are primarily caregivers and are the first point of contact for patients
  • They monitor and track the patient’s vital signs, perform procedures like IV placement, help them in different tests and also administer medications
  • They should keep track of a patient’s progress and enter the data in the patient’s report correctly.
  • They develop the day-to-day nursing care plans in the hospital, and guide families on how to care for the patient after discharge
  • Nurses are often the first to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries
  • Senior nurses have to set up work schedules and assign duties to the nursing staff
  • Head nurses should see the junior nurses are adequately trained and records are properly maintained
  • They should also make sure that equipment and other supplies are in stock
  • Home nurses provide care at a more personal level and stay at the patient’s home to help them recover

Skills and Specifications

  • Nurses should have a compassionate nature and need to be empathetic to the patients
  • They should be in good health and may have to work at odd hours
  • They need to be tactful, patient, understanding, dependable and should possess a desire to help people
  • They should have very good communication skills and also be able to work as a part of a team
  • They should be honest and discreet

Education and Qualifications

There are various nursing colleges which offer bachelors and master’s degree in nursing. Depending on the designation one can go for these courses and also apply for license. A bachelors degree is basic requirement.
