Clinical Research Assistant Job Profile and Description

A clinical research assistant has to help in setting up, monitoring and completing clinical trials. He is also responsible for coordinating the work of the people who are working on the clinical research project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • A clinical research assistant has to help the scientist, physician or investigator who is responsible for conducting the trial.
  • He has to involve himself in developing and implementing strategies in recruiting subjects for the trials in order to increase patient randomization.
  • He has to oversee the attendance of meetings between research nurses and the investigator.
  • He has to maintain patient records including all the details of the patients being recruited for trials, the progress of each patient during the trial, any adverse events that may have occurred during trial and other relevant information.
  • He has to make sure that payments are being made to the investigators and the trial site.
  • He has to be responsible for maintaining records of clinical trial shipments.
  • He has to ensure that adequate supplies are available to meet project needs.
  • He has to help the investigator and project manager in writing the final reports of the trial.

Skills and Specifications

  • A clinical research assistant should possess excellent communication as well as very good interpersonal skills.
  • He has to have strong organizational and administration skills.
  • He has to be wiling to work on his own for a lot of times.
  • He may have to work for long hours, especially when the completion of a trial is nearing.

Education and Qualifications

A clinical research assistant should possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences or a related field. A PhD is great for gaining future promotions. A desire to research is an added advantage in this profession.
