Postal Service Mail Carriers Job Profile and Description

Postal Service Mail Carriers are tasked to transport and deliver mail to businesses and residences in cities, suburbs, municipalities and rural areas. Carriers are classified by type of delivery route—either city or rural—but their duties are similar. There are established travel routes that carriers follow in delivering mail and they cover these routes by foot, vehicle, or by both. The Postal Service provides official mail vehicles to city carriers while most rural carriers make use of their own vehicles but get reimbursed for gas and maintenance.

Postal Service Mail Carriers Duties and Responsibilities

  • Observe work shift schedules and delivery routes assigned.
  • Ensure receipts are signed for registered and insured mail.
  • Collect associated postal charges and complete any paperwork as required.
  • Sort and organize mail for delivery, arranging it by street number sequence, zip code, etc.
  • Deliver mail to businesses and residences along defined routes by walking and/or driving, using official or own vehicles.
  • Reimburse gasoline expenses when using own vehicle for mail delivery.
  • Return to the post office with mail collected from homes, businesses, and public mailboxes.
  • Collect mail from roadside mailboxes, offices and homes.
  • Take note of address changes and redirect mail deliveries to updated address if within zip area or endorse to other carriers in new zip area
  • Hold mail for addressees not available in delivery locations.
  • Leave notices for addressees where to collect mail that could not be delivered

Postal Service Mail Carriers Skills and Specifications

  • Should have strong organization skills to manage volume of sorted mail.
  • Outstanding comprehension and communication skills
  • Has strong understanding of road safety laws

Postal Service Mail Carriers Education and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is required
  • 2-3 year experience in a related courier service gives an edge.
