Transportation engineer Job Profile and Description

A transportation engineer formulates plans for surface transportation projects according to established engineering standards and the government construction policy. He prepares the plans, estimates, and specifications to design transportation facilities. He also makes alterations and modifications to existing streets, highways to improve traffic flow.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • He prepares deeds, property descriptions and way maps to undertake a project
  • He performs field engineering calculations to compensate for change orders and contract estimates
  • He also has to make and present public reports of environmental analysis statements and other transportation information
  • Some transportation engineers also oversee construction and have to invite contractors to submit bids and then choose the best bid
  • The engineers have to make sure that deadlines are met and building standards are followed
  • Engineers also need to check the building materials to ensure that quality and safety is maintained
  • Engineers also make the final inspection of the road after completion to make sure it is safe for drivers
  • They also study areas where new streets or highways can be built, complying with the area’s legal standards
  • They are responsible for the constant study of traffic patterns and suggest areas for improvement
  • Transportation engineers prepare and present reports related to all areas of the field

Skills and Specifications

  • They should possess good analytical ability and should be good with numbers
  • They should also possess leadership qualities and motivate the workers on field
  • They need to coordinate among other divisions and ensure the smooth flow of work.

Education and Qualifications

All transportation engineers should have bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering. Courses in computer-aided design are also useful. They may specialize in a particular field of work, such as making surveys, improving signs or lighting, directing and coordinating construction or maintenance activities etc.
