With the emerging focus on protecting the environment, Ecotour Guides now stand as a pillar in sustainable ecotourism in any nation that wants to preserve its natural beauty while allowing tourists to enjoy them. They are assigned to accompany local and foreign tourists in visiting wildlife and nature preserves and will caution their tourists always with “Take only photographs, leave only footprints”. This means no beer cans, chewing gums, candy wrappers or any artifact of human consumption left behind at their nature trails.

Travel Ecotour Guide Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Ecotour guide operator for the schedule of tours
  • Organize tour members to provide pre-tour briefings on the itinerary, safety, emergency procedures, proper conduct, and cautionary warnings about the ecological balance.
  • Conduct in-tour or post activity briefings on the problems and incidents during the tour that need to be addressed
  • Educate tourists on responsible tourist behaviors, human-caused dangers, and encourage them to educate others
  • Ensure safety of the tourists as well as the environment and its inhabitants.

Travel Ecotour Guide Skills and Specifications

  • A strong desire to teach Leave No Trace knowledge and ethics to tourists
  • Outstanding trekking and backpacking experience
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and people skills
  • Outstanding health and physical condition – can hike with a 40-pound backpack
  • Outstanding leadership qualities to command attention of a group of 20-30 people in the tour group
  • Own personal reliable transportation suitable for rugged terrain
  • Maintains residence near ecotourist site
  • Active in community efforts in preserving the tourist sites in the area.

Travel Ecotour Guide Education and Qualifications

  • At least a High School diploma with a passion for living and trekking outdoors is imperative
  • A diploma in travel and tourism, ecotourism, forest conservation or environmental education from a community college is often preferred but not required.

Travel Ecotour Guide Salary

The position is often a part-time work which peaks during the summer months and can earn $22 – $32 daily.
