Court Clerk Job Profile and Description:

A court clerk is basically related to the court and as the name sounds the job of a court clerk is to maintain and keep court records. They are also sometimes called clerk to the court or clerk of (the) court. They are also appropriately titled after the type of court they are attending to. E.g. a clerk of the peace attends to a justice of the peace. Also in most jurisdictions, the existence of a court of clerk signifies the court to be a court of record.

Duties and Responsibilities of a court clerk:

There are many responsibilities and duties of a court clerk which he or she has to fulfill and here are some of the major responsibilities of a court clerk:

  • A court clerk has to perform the common and basic duties of a clerk or secretary and the duties include typing, filing, attending to court appointments, answering calls
  • He or she will have to administer the  oaths to witnesses, jurors and grand jurors during trials and hearings of the court
  • He or she will have to do the work including authenticates copies of court records, prepares docket of cases to be called, contacts witnesses, lawyers, and litigants for the court and instructs them when to appear in court
  • He or she will have to record and transcribe minutes of court proceedings as well as  handle financial record keeping, and also have to act as custodian of the court’s seal and court records
  • He or she will have to do the work related to finance so will have to collect fees and other payments or deposits made with the court then will have to  prepare reports and court forms, and processes petitions and warrants
  • He or she will have to handle the court correspondences and will have to take care of publication of court decisions, reviews court records for accuracy, and handles all court correspondences
  • He or she will have to coordinate and maintain the work  with other related departments and staff in other legal matters

There are some of the duties which are related the type of court and states or jurisdiction where the clerk of court works:

  • A court clerk has to read a jury’s verdict in some jurisdictions then will also have to  officiate civil weddings in many states and as well as will have to process passports and swearing in of new citizens


  • A court clerk will have to do the works and exercises some judicial power, hears probate, incompetence, adoption, and foreclosure cases, issues warrants, and orders for arrest, contempt, or involuntary commitment. He or she will have to do the common work of a clerk which contains the work of giving criminal first appearance, appointing  indigent counsel or public defenders, and signing release and/or temporary confinement orders


A court clerk in the city supervises all court officers in the court room. The most important thing is he or she does the work as the highest ranking non-judicial person in the courtroom


The duty includes advising the magistrates in matters of law relating to the case (since magistrates usually have no legal qualifications while court clerks do have)


  • There he or she will have to  supervise court staff, and oversee the hiring and training of court staff, as well as will have to management  of court budget and other administrative concerns
