The Museum Archivists has to ensure the authenticity and preservation of historical and cultural documents. They can be specialize in such areas because as it is a very crucial and vital job in the areas such as  historic scientific papers and drawings, architectural blueprints of historic structures, medical manuscripts, war time and diplomatic treatises, political speeches, original book manuscripts, and personal letters of historical persons.

Museum Archivist Duties and Responsibilities

There are a lot of duties and responsibilities which has to be fulfilled and here are the some of them:

  • A museum archivist first of all has to classify the assets and prepare the catalogues of the archival assets of the museum
  • He or she will have to prepare the documents related to the newly added collection.
  • He or she will have to maintain the coordination with historians and fellow archivists in assessing the authenticity of newly included ancient or history documents in the museum’s collection

  • He or she should always try to enrich the collections of museum so should be very active in finding the source and acquire items to enrich museum’s archival collections.
  • He or she has to be very strict about the security so will have to maintain the coordination with the museum’s security in using the best technologies to secure and protect specific and overall museum archival collections.
  • He or she has to conduct and supervise the lectures on new document finds and publish write-ups on them.
  • He or she has to restore and preserve the artifacts of a museum so has to maintain the coordination with the relevant experts in the preservation of delicate museum artifacts.
  • He or she has to study and do the research work and also has to conduct the research work
  • He or she has to study about newly discovered historic and cultural manuscripts in the museum’s collection.
  • He or she will be always active in overseeing and reviewing the production of museum promotional and informational literatures.

Museum Archivist Skills and Specifications

There are the following skills which are needed to be a museum archivist:

  • The candidate must have the required skills for the job such as strong interpersonal, diplomatic and negotiation skills
  • As it is the job of preserving the artifice collections so the candidate must have extensive and thorough knowledge in the specific curator ship assignment (natural history, martial artifacts, burial customs, etc.)
  • The candidate should have the skills of communication so should have strong communication skills both verbally and written.
  • The candidate should be very excellent in computers and should be literate in computers and in using museum database systems.

Museum Archivist Education and Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a BS degree in history, archeology or any of the social sciences
  • A master’s degree in the antiquities is preferred in the candidate.
  • The candidate having the past 5-7 years of working experience in related archival discipline is an advantage
