The Graduate Teaching Assistants are those who supposed to provide academic and logistical support to graduate professors. The job entails teaching the students and conducts the classes in lower undergraduate classed as a substitute teacher or in grading student theses and test papers. It will be needed to perform the teaching and non teaching tasks properly. He or she needs to assist the professors in the  field or lab research work.

There are the following duties and responsibilities of a graduate teaching assistant which are expected to be fulfilled:

  • The prime responsibility is to observe the work hours assigned by the professor and the college.
  • It will be needed to oversee the timekeeping rules and regulations.
  • He or she has the responsibility to perform the entire tasks assigned by the professor which may be relevant to teaching and non-teaching work.
  • It will be the duty to work as an assistant to the professor as a substitute teacher in undergraduate courses.
  • It will be also needed to assist the professor in laboratory or field research or in assignments related to the furtherance of the course requirements.
  • He or she has to provide support to the professor in the paperwork and documentation work such as grading student thesis, term papers and exams.
  • He or she has the duty to oversee and review the records and reports such as journals and textbooks that have the potential to be part of the curriculum are reading requirements.

  • The person needs to have the excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • He or she should have the exceptional interpersonal and diplomatic skills to do the job.
  • The other skills required for the job are the skills of organization, leadership and managerial skills to do the effective management.

  • The basic degree required for the job is a bachelor’s degree in the relevant course.
  • It will be an added advantage for the person having a master’s degree if there’s strong competition for the position.
