Health Education Assistant Job Description and Profile

The Health Education Assistant is a paraprofessional class type and needs to work under the general supervision. The job basically entails assisting the staff members in the basic tasks. He or she needs to apply the basic health and nutrition concepts to conduct routine group education classes and demonstrations as well. He or she performs other related functions and duties when required. It will be needed to conduct regular nutrition education classes and meetings for women and other program participants.

Duties and responsibilities

There are the number of duties and responsibilities of a Health Education Assistant which have to be fulfilled and they are as follows:

  • The prime responsibility is to conduct and direct the group education demonstrations and classes as well.
  • He or she needs to demonstrate the classes at clinic sites on topics of health and nutrition like dental health and healthy snacks.
  • He or she needs to work as an assistant of the professional staff members in every program orientation meetings and classes and the related work and tasks.
  • It will be the duty to explain the rules and regulations to the students on the WIC, responsibilities and rights of participants and usage of program vouchers.
  • He or she has to ensure that the participants or the students understand full concepts and the basics of the nutrition.
  •  The duty includes providing health information and other required information with the initiation of discussions and answering of questions.
  • He or she has to do the following jobs such as distributing the informational brochures and materials to participants.
  • It will be needed to work as an assistant of the staff members in the preparation of educational materials, operation of audiovisual aids and other related things.
  •  It will be necessary to display the informational material on various bulletin boards.
  • The health education assistant has the responsibility to determine the eligibility of participants by obtaining his nutrition and diet information.
  • It will be the duty to obtain and observe the measurements of participants whenever necessary.
  • The duty includes preparing and maintaining the records of the required information such as entering participant’s health information into the computer system.

Skills and Specifications

The required skills and specifications are as follows:

  • The person needs to have the ability to learn the WIC regulations and rules to do the job.
  • He or she should have the ability to interact with the people to make lead discussions and group presentations.
  • The person must interpret and explain existing regulations and rules to the students properly so should have the ability.
  • He or she needs to have the required skills of health education methods and techniques with the procedures as well thoroughly.
  • He or she should be able to demonstrate the people effectively and disseminate program information to a great number of people when required.
  • He or she needs to have the ability to know how to document status of clients.
  • He or she should have exceptional interpersonal skills to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with supervisors, co-employees and the general public
  • The person needs to have the quality of learning the human behavior and group dynamics.
  • He or she should be very honest in nature and must be able to maintain and keep client confidentiality.

Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree required for the job is a bachelor’s degree in the relevant course in any Science course or any other related domain.
  • The other requirement is having the State Driver’s License (Class C).
  • The person also needs to have the past 2 years of clerical working experience in any recognized community health program.
  • He or she should have got the certificate from the requiring public contact providing basic type of health or nutrition information to patients and providing explanation of program regulations and rules.
