Budget Analyst Job Profile and Description

The budget analyst works as a part of a team in the corporate planning function. The main responsibility is to prepare and validate the financial budget plans. It is necessary to take the plans from the unit level to a consolidated corporate level. The responsibility is to ensure the forthcoming budgets remain representative as the departmental needs. The Budget Analysts may be assigned to various departments to work with their respective heads in developing and implementing their respective budgets.

Duties and Responsibilities

There are the following duties and responsibilities of a budget analyst which have to be fulfilled:

  • The budget analyst has the main duty to prepare and present the operating and capital expense budgets.
  • He or she also needs to work for the management approval.
  • The analyst has to identify and analyze new departmental budget items.
  • He or she has to identify the budget for justification by originating office.
  • It is also needed to ensure the compliance of the budgeting procedures and guidelines.
  • He or she is responsible for providing regular budget reports to the senior authorities.
  • It will be also needed to work as an assistant of the department head in justifying variances between actual and budget.
  • It is needed to develop the budget models to assist departments in their financial planning.
  • He or she needs to maintain the coordination with accounting in processing actual versus budget performance reports.

Skills and Specifications

The required skills and specifications are as follows:

  • The person must be very detail oriented, conscientious and systematic with a high level of accuracy in preparing budget spreadsheets.
  • The person needs to have the excellent computer literacy and learning speed to use automated accounting and budget planning systems to do the job.
  • He or she must have the strong data organizational skills to do the effective organization.
  • The person needs to have the team working skills with the interpersonal skills to establish and maintain the effective working relationships.
  • He or she must have the verbal and written communication skills to interact with unit and departmental head when developing their budget plans for approval and implementation.
  • He or she should have the ability to work for the long hours to set deadlines.

Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree required to do the job is a college degree in a business management and accounting field.
  • The person must have the required computer knowledge and literacy with spreadsheets and word processing.
  • He or she should be very familiar with automated accounting systems or ERP such as SAP/financials.
  • A related budgeting or accounting experience in another company is also an edge for the person.
