Dietetic Technician Job Profile and Description

The Dietetic Technician is basically a nutrition technician or dietary aide. He or she works under the direct supervision by a dietician. He or she has to do the planning and producing meals.  He or she has to work as an assistant in many tasks such as provisioning of food materials, development and implementation of nutritional programs for various sectors of society. It is necessary to ensure that the work is in compliance of the  nutritional guidelines.

Dietetic Technician Duties and Responsibilities

There are a wide range of duties and responsibilities which are required to be fulfill by a dietetic technician:

  • The basic duty is to assist the dietician in planning and developing menus.
  • He or she needs to guide patients, school children, families or individuals.
  • It will be also needed to assist the dietician in documenting work.
  • He or she has to prepare the records of the nutritional findings in commercial food products, popular and fancy foods, or reviewing diet supplements.
  • It will be the duty to help in the research work as well in the effects of food groups on controlled subjects.
  • It is needed to prepare the reports on dietary problems to dietician and healthcare professionals.
  • He or she has to assist the dietician in the supervision of food reduction or services.
  • It is the responsibility to prepare the meals according to the prescribed recipes and quantities.
  • He or she has the duty to obtain and assess dietary histories of individuals as basis for planning nutritional programs.
  • It is the duty to assist in the analysis of the recipes of food stores, fast foods, restaurants and cafeterias

Dietetic Technician Skills and Specifications

The required skills and specifications are as follows:

  • The person must have strong oral and written communication skills to be an excellent communicator.
  • He or she needs to have a very strong knowledge about food groups and their corresponding calories and nutritional values.
  • The person must necessarily have the excellent organization skills to do the high organization.
  • The others skills required for the job are the exceptional, supervisory and managerial skills to do the job.

Dietetic Technician Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree required for the job is a high school diploma.
  • The other requirement is the person must have the equivalent experience working with a dietician.
  • The person having a post secondary course in and 2-3 years of experience in a nutrition-focused company is an advantage.

The salary basically depends upon the institution and the state which is to be served.
