Seaman Job Profile and Description
A Seaman works on a ship for a specific amount of time. Time spent onboard is count as ‘Sea Time’, and once enough amount of sea time is acquired, a seaman can go for different courses for & examinations to become a certified Seaman. These tests include – standing watch abilities, & performing guard duty etc.
Duties and Responsibilities –
- Assisting the Senior Seaman
- Performing deck utility man duties and, may be asked to do different tasks
- Standing as guard, leveling and painting, handling lines during ship mooring, and helping in the actual tying and release of vessel
- Assisting in different procedures and handling all deck gear – cradling, topping and housing of booms
- Helping carpenter in repair works
- Performing as helmsman when needed
- Reading draft markings and working as a cargo watch at the times of loading and discharging of freight operations.
- Calling the watch – awakening personnel that includes officers scheduled to go on watch
- Keeping the heads and passageways in good condition
- Operating deck machineries
- Overhauling and fitting any standing or loose ship rigging
- Sewing, repairing and repairing canvas
- Handling a lifeboat under sail or oars
- Assuming the duties of the lifeboat in charge
- Maintaining the bridge in a clean condition
Skills and Specifications –
- Tolerant
- Be able to work with odd workers with complete attention
- Be physically fit and strong
Education and qualification –
- High school diploma
- Knowledge of sailing and sea life
