Occupational Psychologist Job Profile and Description

Occupational psychologists help company to bring out the best performance from the employees and thereby also help to make the employee more satisfied in the job. He applies psychological knowledge and theories on organizational issues like culture and change, as well at an individual level. Some of them work as consultants while some are directly employed by the company.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Occupational psychologists help in crafting and applying principles of psychology to understand company’s or team’s culture and help them achieve company’s objectives.
  2. They give advice on new technologies like e-learning or virtual team working.
  3. They also help the staff members to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills in them to work efficiently for the company.
  4. They also help them deal with stress and high pressure situations and work stress free.
  5. They also provide suggestions to the management on how to motivate staff and influence them to increase their productivity and achieve company’s objectives.
  6. They have to develop, implement or evaluate selection procedures, conduct psychometric tests and structured interviews.
  7. They need to develop training and appraisal programs.
  8. They give counseling to the staff to help them plan their career to reach their full potential.
  9. They may have to work with engineers and physiologists to improve the working environment and equipment.
  10. They study the causes of accidents and suggest prevention measures related to behavior.
  11. They give advice on stress prevention and stress management strategies, and teach the staff on handling these techniques.

Skills and Specifications

  1. They must be understanding and sympathetic to the needs of the employees of the organization.
  2. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. They must use their discretion and maintain client confidentiality.
  4. The decisions should be based upon the company’s policies and suggestions should be based on it.

Education and Qualifications

A degree of bachelors and master in Psychology is essential.
