The insurance sale agent sells life, property, automotive, casualty, health and all other types of insurance policies. Besides referring customers to independent brokers, he may work as an independent broker, or be employed by some insurance company.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The insurance salesperson explains the rules and procedures to policy holders, analyzes insurance programs and suggests or changes if needed
- He has to make calculations on the premium and decide on a payment method
- He has to interact with interested people in order to find out about their financial and physical condition
- He has to ensure that all the policy requirements are fulfilled like medical checkups etc
- He has to maintain records and contact the policy holder for premium payment or renewal
- He has to make marketing and sales strategies to compete with other insurance companies and to reach targets
- He needs to personally inspect the insured property to see the risk factor in the settlement
Skills and Specifications
- He must have knowledge of principles of promoting and selling products or services
- He should have good written and verbal communications and negotiation skills
- Knowledge of the basics of computer is also needed
- Clerical duties also have to be performed and so he should know how to manage files, keep records etc
- He should have a talent for strategic planning and
- Leadership skills, confidence and persuasion are important abilities
- Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and mathematics are required too
- He should have good interpersonal skills and answer all the queries that the customer may have
Education and Qualifications
Those interested in this field can go for a degree in commerce or an MBA in sales, finance, banking etc. A background in economics, mathematics, and accounting will also be of assistance.
