Automotive Service Mechanic Job Profile and Description

The Automotive Service Mechanics are the people who restore your vehicle’s serviceable conditions after a breakdown or a road accident. They inspect, troubleshoot and repair automobiles and light trucks that are powered by gasoline, electricity, a hybrid of both, or alternative fuels such as ethanol. They perform basic routine care maintenance, and diagnose more complex problems to plan and execute vehicle repairs.

Automotive Service Mechanic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examine and assess vehicle, perform standard checklist testing, compile and document repair cost estimates, and secure clients’ approval to perform repairs.
  • Test electronic computer components as per standard checklist for the car make
  • Troubleshoot fuel ignition system, and emissions control systems, using electronic testing equipment.
  • Check and repair, overhaul electro mechanical parts and engine parts as per repair manuals.
  • Document inspection and test results, repair work done and parts replaced for proper billing and record upkeep.
  • Test drive vehicle to confirm restored condition before calling the client.

Automotive Service Mechanic Skills and Specifications

  • Should be well-grounded in the electro mechanicals of automotive operations
  • Should have knowledge in the car electronic and computerized systems
  • Excellent communication skills to explain to clients the nature of the car problem and why certain parts need to be replaced
  • Should have high comprehension skills to understand automotive blueprints and reference manuals.

Automotive Service Mechanic Education and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma with 2-3 years of apprenticeship under a seasoned automotive mechanic is basic but with the increasing sophistication of automotive, most employers look for a more formal post secondary community college or vocational school training
  • Getting a certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is now basic for applicants aspiring to work in automotive repair facilities in urban areas.

The average hourly wage of Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics is $18. The middle 50% received between $14 and $24 per hour. With the lowest 10% earning $11 and the highest 10% earning $30 per hour.
