Wrist Watch Repairer Job Profile and Description

Also called watchmakers or horologists, Watch Repairers troubleshoot, clean and use precision tools to adjust, repair and overhaul mechanical Wrist Watch movements of all types, brands and price ranges. Many are also self-trained in servicing digital quartz Wrist Watch movements. Many are freelance repairers while others are employed in authorized service centers of noted brands like Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Seiko, Rado, Fossil, etc. Some are also known to specialize in specific brands or movements.

Wrist Watch Repairer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Discuss with client on perceived problems with the watch and provide indicative estimate if problem is known.
  • Disassemble Wrist Watch movement parts and inspect them for worn, misaligned, or rusty parts, using loupes.
  • Using the right jeweler tools and magnifying eye loupes, repair or replace damaged, broken, or deteriorated parts with the use of lathes, drill presses, and hand tools.
  • Clean watch parts with prescribed cleaning solvents or subject them to ultrasound watch cleaning machines.
  • Reassemble movement parts and perform calibration and observation for a period of time prior to being cleared for return to the customer.
  • Test Wrist Watch performance, reliability and accuracy using meters and other electronic measuring instruments.

Wrist Watch Repairer Skills and Specifications

  • Ability to make precise hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity in handling minute parts
  • Ability to make quick and accurate troubleshooting
  • Admirable organizational skill in putting small parts of a Wrist Watch in proper location for easy retrieval when needed.
  • High ability to see details in close proximity.

Wrist Watch Repairer Education and Qualification

  • A high school diploma is basic but a vocational course in watch technology or Horography is preferred.
  • A Certified Watchmaker title is good.
  • 3-5 years experience in calibrating mechanical precision instruments or repairing clocks is a benefit.
  • 2-3 years experience in watch repair for certain brands is an added advantage

The average annual wage for salaried Watch Repairers is approx $20 per hour or $40,000. There’s wide disparity in wages between repair centers of brands of watches.
