Food Preparation Job Profile and Description


The food preparation jobs involve various tasks. Hotels, restaurants and caterers are some of the establishments that employ food preparation workers. These jobs include duties like cooking, ingredients preparation, and handling supplies etc.

Duties and Responsibilities –

  • Storing food in the containers for avoiding spoilage
  • Weighing & preparing ingredients for food
  • Preparing different dishes as per the instructions and with the approved procedures
  • Packing foods for take away food orders
  • Serving foods to customers
  • Placing food trays over food warmers for instant orders, or storing food in refrigerators for later delivery or service
  • Checking supplies and keeping inventory records properly
  • Assisting the kitchen staff for different tasks
  • Removing the trash, scraping leftovers from dishes to garbage containers
  • Preparing special dressings and sauces for sandwiches or items like ‘pastas’

Skills and Specifications –

  • Should have good knowledge in food preparation
  • Should have good customer service ethics
  • Should have good communication skills
  • Should be a fast learner and, a team player
  • Should be ready to work with minimum supervision

Education and Qualifications –

For helpers and cooks, no formal educational requirements, one should know how to prepare food ingredients – on-job training is provided. A hotel management degree or diploma in culinary arts is required for the positions of a Chef.
