Materials Engineer Job Profile and Description


The Materials Engineer has to take care of the materials a business uses to produce products. They have to source raw materials for production. They examine, plan, support, and engineer composites or derivatives of different types of materials, whether natural or synthetics, used in fabricating and manufacturing processes.

Materials Engineer Duties and Responsibilities –

  • Managing a team of scientists, metallurgical and chemical engineers for evaluating new and substitute materials suggested as cost effective alternative to originals.
  • Reviewing materials and developing the homologation procedures and processes to manufacture these materials to use for the production, particularly in the aircraft sheet metal section.
  • Developing new standards in adopting more strong materials exceeding original requirement.
  • Providing the documentation about proposed raw materials for approval by the management

Materials Engineer Skills and Specifications –

  • Must have complete knowledge about chemical compositions of various materials and their worth in industrial and consumer application
  • Must have an eye for detail and have strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Must have adequate interpersonal skills to work in a team

Materials Engineer Education and Qualifications –

  • An Associate or B.S degree in Chemical, Metallurgical, Mechanical or related engineering sciences
  • 2-3 years of work experience in a related materials processing environment is a plus

The average annual salary of a Materials Engineer ranges from $63,800 to $102,000.
