Reporting to the Advertising Director or PR Head of a organization, the Media Relations Manager handles a team of media relations officers assigned to nurture and maintain good supplier business relationship with various forms of communications media such as the internet and the conventional print and broadcast media. The overriding objective is to ensure that the organization can count on a reliable stable of information media outlets for its marketing and PR efforts.

Media Relations Manager Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, nurture and sustain a healthy business relationship with media channel administrators and directors to increase better chances of getting preferential advertising and PR prime time rates.
  • Develop the short term and long term communications media plan for marketing and public relations as assigned and present to management for approval.
  • Oversee the team of media planning officers and agents to ensure they follow corporate polices in handling the media and in compliance with approved media plans and programs.

Media Relations Manager Skills and Specifications

  • Should have a thorough exposure in all communications media forms and how to optimize corporate presence in any of them
  • Should have excellent organizational, managerial, administrative and leadership skills.
  • Should have excellent communication, social and interpersonal skills

Media Relations Manager Education and Qualifications

  • A college degree is mass communication, advertising, public administration and related fields is at least required
  • A Master’s degree in business management or administration is an advantage
  • At least 8-10 years of experience in direct and mass sales with the last 4 years in a supervisory or management role is an advantage.

The annual salary of a Media Relations Manager depends on the nature and reach of the business as well as the state. A organization with extensive mass media and direct marketing reach will pay more handsomely.
