Pediatric Nurse Job Profile and Description

Registered nurses or nurse practitioners with advance training in pediatrics specialize in the care of newborn infants and children up to pre-teens or adolescent years. They work in the pediatric sections of hospitals and maternity clinics to assist the resident pediatricians in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases in children as well as injuries and trauma in children.

Pediatric Nurse Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the pediatrician in administering to the diagnostic procedures to assess the ailment of injuries of children.
  • Meet with attending pediatrician, patient-children and their parents or guardians to discuss issues regarding treatment options
  • Observe work shift schedules and may be required to extend work beyond shift.
  • Monitor patient’s convalescence and post-surgical response to medication.
  • Assist pediatrician in minor surgical operations.
  • Maintain and update patient’s medical histories.
  • Conduct essential and routine diagnostics like blood tests, urine and stool samples, blood pressure, and pulse rates.
  • Request appropriate laboratory tests, interpret lab results and communicate said results to patient and parents/guardians.
  • Follow up on treatment medications as directed by the pediatrician
  • Conduct vaccination programs in community health clinics.

Pediatric Nurse Skills and Specifications

  • Should have genuine patience, love, concern and understanding for children
  • Should have excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Can work long hours under extreme pressures.

Pediatric Nurse Education and Qualifications

  • BS in Nursing with NCLEX certification either as a Registered Nurse or an Associate degree with certification as a practical Nurse is essential.
  • A post graduate training in Pediatric Nursing is an advantage and preferred
  • 3-5 years experience in general nursing care of pediatric wards is an added advantage,

The average annual salary for a registered nurse with specialization in the care of newly born infants in the pediatric ward was $65,000. The middle 50% earned between $52,500 and $77,000 with the bottom 10% getting close to $44,000 while the top 10$ got about $95,500.
