Energy Auditor Job Profile and Description

With the current focus on the environment and in the area of sustainable alternative power sourcing, the Energy Auditor, also called Environmental Auditors in other industries, conducts audits of buildings, building systems and process systems to check on their energy consumption efficiencies and compliance with state and local environmental regulations.

Energy Auditor Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify and prioritize energy saving options.
  • Inspect building facilities, electrical systems, mechanical systems, hydraulic systems and waste management systems to determine the energy consumption of each system Collect and analyze building data on energy usage.
  • Prepare audit reports detailing energy consumption analysis and energy saving recommendations.
  • Perform tests such as blower-door tests to find air leaks.
  • Educate building owners on energy efficiency and answer questions related to the costs of operating household appliances and the use of energy efficient appliances.
  • Calculate potential cost savings from energy saving devices.
  • Recommend energy efficient technologies, alternate energy sources energy or improvements such as heating system upgrades, attic insulation, window retrofits, etc.

Energy Auditor Skills and Specifications

  • Should have thorough knowledge or ready access to information on power consumption of various electric appliances, efficiency rating systems and suitable alternative power sources
  • Should have adequate mathematical and computation skills
  • Should have outstanding analytical and detail-centric skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Outstanding interpersonal and people management skills

Energy Auditor Education and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is basic but an associate or college course work in the area of civil works, architecture or related courses is preferred
  • Should have the proper training to conduction inspections such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) training.

Energy Auditor Salary

The average annual salary for Energy Auditors is $31 per hour or $61,000 per annum. On the other hand auditors in general enjoyed a median of $60,000 with the middle 50% earning between $47,000 and $80,000. The bottom 10% earned less than $37,500, and the top 10% earned about $110,000.
