Power plants generate electricity from natural (fossil fuels, solar, wind, falling water) and man-made (Nuclear reactors) and the people in charge of various responsibilities to ensure uninterrupted electricity to residential, commercial and industrial users are the Power Plant Operators. They are found in traditional hydroelectric, geothermal, and coal-fired power plants as well as the nuclear reactors, and the more environment friendly solar and wind driven power plants. They operate and retain the machinery to generate electric power from these sources.

Power Plant Operator Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor power plant console gauges and indicators to detect evidence of operating problems.
  • Maintain generation of specified electrical power output by adjusting controls and regulating flow of power to substations.
  • Implement load balancing methods to ensure plant and substations do not suffer any overload condition Coordinate with systems operators to regulate line voltages and transmission loads.
  • Control power generating equipment such as turbines, boilers, generators, or reactors.
  • Start or stop generators, turbines, auxiliary pumping equipment, or other plant equipment as necessary or directed by power plant engineers.
  • Clean, lubricate, or sustain assigned power plant equipment to prevent failure or corrosion.

Power Plant Operator Skills and Specifications

  • Ought to be highly developed observation skills to anticipate and detect operational anomalies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with a team, as well as verbal and written communication skills in English.

Power Plant Operator Education and Qualifications

  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in the sciences preferably electrical and chemical sciences is requirement for a good company
  • 2-3 years experience in related work gives an added advantage
