Historian Job Profile and Description

One of the more research-intensive workers are Historians. They work with various other disciplines like museum curators, archivists and archeologists in researching and analyzing records of past events of high significance to the progress of humanity and to its historical wealth. They study recent histories and with new findings that can reshape past histories. They go to sources documents like personal diaries and letters of famous personages, along with newspaper articles and first person accounts in periodicals, interviews, films and unpublished manuscripts.

Historian Duties and Responsibilities

  • Check authenticity and reliability of information with fellow historians, archeologists, archivists, news bureaus, and subject material to dating procedures.
  • Gather data from sources likes first news accounts, court records, police blotters, personal diaries, and photographs to piece together the real circumstances behind an event.
  • Travel as required to conduct interviews with first person participants in the events or nearest surviving kin, neighbors.
  • Trace historicity of events to establish timelines and socio-political causal links
  • Conduct research in universities, museums, libraries, and other academic institutions to validate historical theories and hypothesis.
  • Present and publish historical and socio-political findings and theories.
  • Mount exhibits and lectures on tour to clarify or present new historic findings.

Historian Skills and Specifications

  • Should have the unique analytical and deductive ability to identify historic events and their predicating circumstances along with their socio-geo-political implications
  • Should have excellent organizational skills for sorting through and separating facts from hearsay
  • Should have strong affinity with investigative journalism
  • Should have excellent verbal and written communication skills

Historian Education and Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in History, Archeology, Social Sciences or related subjects is essential for a position in research or the academe.
  • A PhD in the same field is an added advantage
  • 6-9 years of experience in the research or teaching faculty is an advantage

The average annual salary for Historians is around $55,000. The middle 50% earned between $35,000 and $80,000 with the highest 10% earning about $110,000 and the lowest 10% earning about $30,000.
