Child Welfare Caseworker Job Profile and Description

A Child Welfare Caseworker helps children by providing services, such as foster care arrangements, adoption placements, and protection of neglected or abused children. Child welfare caseworkers are responsible for the well-being of children in adoptive or foster homes, medical treatment centers, and institutions. Often referred as child welfare social workers, child protective services, and family services social workers, most caseworkers work commonly in non-profit organizations, public and private agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Placing children in foster homes and counseling adoptive parents regarding pending legal adoption.
  • Evaluating psychological and physical makeup of children to determine needs.
  • Evaluating environmental factors of foster home and personal features of adoption applicants.
  • Referring child and parent to community resources depending on the needs of child.
  • Supervising and consulting Para professionals and professionals working with the vulnerable children and their families.
  • Investigating home conditions for the protection of children from harmful environmental area.
  • Delivering directly interventions to the children and their families using appropriate evidenced based methods.
  • Assisting parents with child nurturing problems, youth and children with difficulties in various social adjustments.
  • Counseling children and parents, foster parents, guardians, or institution staff, regarding plans for adoptive child’s care.
  • Providing support in training programs on thematic issues like child’s behavior, development and parenting to individuals and parents.

Skills and Specifications

  • Skills to accumulate and analyze data to plan appropriate interventions.
  • Prioritization and time management skills.
  • Able to engage with families, children, caregivers, and young people quickly and purposefully.
  • Efficient risk management.
  • Should be polite and friendly.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or sociology related field is basic requirement.
  • Postgraduate degree in fields related to social work gives an added advantage.
