Telephone Line Installers/Repairers Job Profile and Description

Telecommunications line installers and repairers install and maintain the voice and data lines and cables used by local and long-distance telephone services, cable television, the Internet, and other communications networks. These services involve installing a variety of copper cables, including fiber-optic cables which require special skills, such as splicing and terminating optical cables. In addition, they should be able to operationalize, test and troubleshoot cables and networking equipment fro which they are trained for.

Telephone Line Installers/Repairers Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive telephone crew trucks to and from job sites.
  • Install telephone and data cabling with careful distinction on wire and cable color differences to ensure correct matching and termination
  • Conduct testing of voice and data circuits and components in accordance with procedures to isolate sources of breakdowns, using test meters, schematic polarity probes, diagrams, and other company prescribed hand tools.
  • Test all repaired and newly installed or upgraded cabling and equipment to ensure proper functioning in conformity with specifications
  • Inspect cabling on a regular basis in order to ensure continued functioning.
  • Repair or replace faulty voice and data apparatus such as defective and damaged telephones, modems, routers and wires

Telephone Line Installers/Repairers Skills and Specifications

  • Should have excellent medical and physical health
  • Should have high computer literacy
  • Should have a valid professional driver’s license
  • Should have adequate verbal and writing communication skills for completing reports

Telephone Line Installers/Repairers Education and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is the minimum requirement and while a 2-year post secondary vocational education in electronics or computer technology gives an edge, the position often calls for years of on-the-job training and classroom work.
  • A few years experience in the operation of telephone equipment gives an edge.
