Trainee Avionics Technician Job Profile and Description

The Avionics Technician Trainee is a job apprenticeship position to becoming a full fledge US-FAA licensed Aircraft Avionics Technician who is responsible for the test, repair and overhaul of the avionics equipment in an aircraft cockpit in any commercial or military aircraft for which they are trained to work on. The modern avionics of an aircraft consist of the electronics and computerized systems in the aircraft.

Trainee Avionics Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the regular and senior avionics technicians in the testing, repair and overhaul of avionics instrumentation installed the aircraft types for which they are certificated to work on
  • Ensure that work done is in compliance with US-FAA avionics maintenance standards.
  • Follow orders directed by senior avionics technicians in the conduct of their responsibilities
  • Perform data entry in the automated daily productivity system
  • Withdraw parts by decrementing the needed part number from the automated maintenance inventory system.
  • Participate actively in productivity and quality improvement programs on the shop floor.

Trainee Avionics Technician Skills and Specifications

  • Must have excellent reading comprehension skills to read thorough avionics repair manuals of various manufacturers and corporate engineering bulletins
  • Must have a superb eye for detail to work on the minute parts of avionics equipment
  • Must have excellent electronic troubleshooting discipline
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English

Trainee Avionics Technician Education and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is basic but an associate degree in aircraft maintenance or a technical course in any community college or vocational school is an advantage but this can be gained while at work.
  • An appropriate A&P license is needed after training to become a full fledge aircraft avionics technician

Avionics Technician Trainee Salary

As a trainee or apprentice, the salary is often no more than $12,000 – $13,000. But once you pass the training, you can expect to get at least $45,000 annually as an A&P licensed Aircraft Mechanic, depending on the airline and state where you work.
